The JAXELL Soft Pastels set of 24 from Honsell (art. no. 47651) contains 24 soft artist-quality pastel sticks for drawing, shading and soft colour gradients. The sticks are highly pigmented and give strong colour.

Each stick measures 10 × 10 × 64 mm. The square shape has edges for fine lines, while you can lay in areas of colour with the broad side. 24 shades are a compact selection: further shades come from layering colours and blending them.

Working with the soft pastels

The soft texture blends gently, for example with a finger or a paper stump. For painterly effects you can also work the sticks with water: go over the pastel with a damp brush and the colour will flow. The pastels can also be combined with watercolour, sanguine or charcoal, for example a charcoal underdrawing with coloured accents in pastel.

• Apply light shades first and dark ones last, because with heavy application the paper texture fills up and further layers hold less well.
• Pastel is dusty and smudges easily; a fixative secures finished work.
