Schmincke pastel fixative – colourless fixative spray for pastel drawings

Schmincke pastel fixative is a colourless fixative spray in a 300 ml aerosol can. You use it to set finished pastel drawings so that the loose pigment dust smudges less. The fixative dries quickly, does not yellow and is age-resistant. It is made in Germany.

The aerosol applies the fixative as a fine mist. This keeps the application even, and you do not have to touch the picture with a brush.

How to fix your pastel drawing

Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, well away from sources of ignition. Lay the picture flat or stand it upright. Spray from a distance of about 30 cm in even strokes, using several thin coats rather than one wet one. A coat that is too thick can make the colour patchy. Let each coat dry briefly before you spray the next.

Good to know

Fixatives can slightly change the look of pastel colours, especially light shades. Test the spray first on a sample sheet or an offcut. If you work in layers, you can lightly fix the intermediate layers and add the highlights again at the end.

Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
