Schmincke Watercolour Fixative – protective film for finished watercolours

Schmincke Watercolour Fixative AEROSPRAY is an alcohol-based final fixative for finished watercolours. It lays a colourless protective film over the picture that protects against dust and moisture. The film dries quickly, does not yellow and is resistant to ageing. The spray can contains 300 ml, enough to protect several pictures.

Watercolour and gouache contain little binder. The colour can therefore visibly deepen when fixed. Applied in very thin layers, the colour hardly changes. The fixative can also make paper more transparent. Test it first on a scrap piece or an unimportant corner before spraying a finished picture.

How to spray the fixative

Work at room temperature and only outdoors or in well-ventilated rooms. The picture should be completely dry.

• Shake the can vigorously before use.
• Stand the picture upright or slightly tilted.
• Spray from a distance of 30–40 cm in a cross pattern, first horizontally, then vertically.
• Only change the spraying direction outside the picture, otherwise stains will appear.
• Apply several very thin layers rather than one thick one.

Good to know

How glossy the surface becomes depends on the absorbency of the paper, the painting technique and the thickness of the layer. The fixative protects against dust and moisture but does not replace protection from light: the usual layer thickness has no significant effect on the UV resistance of the paint layer. Use lightfast colours and frame the picture behind specialist glass. Clogged spray nozzles can be cleaned with acetone. Store the can in a cool, dry place, protected from sunlight and temperatures above 50 °C.

Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
