Royal Talens Panda Oil Pastels – 24 Soft Colours for School and Hobby

The Royal Talens Panda set of 24 contains 24 soft oil pastels for school and hobby use. The pastels release colour easily, and the paper wrappers keep your hands clean. According to Royal Talens, all Panda colours meet the European toy safety standards.

Besides white and black, the set includes several shades of yellow, red, blue, green and brown, as well as violet, light pink and warm grey. Use white to lighten shades and black to darken them. That is enough for landscapes, animals and portraits as well as for free, strongly coloured areas.

Surfaces and combining with other paints

Panda oil pastels adhere to paper, card, wood, drawing film, cellophane, unglazed earthenware, fabric and stone. They are therefore not limited to the drawing sheet, but also suit projects on wood or stone. Royal Talens also mentions combining them with poster paint, watercolour paint and Talens Ecoline.

Two techniques to try

Both techniques come from the Royal Talens application notes:

• Resist technique: draw with the pastels, then paint over them with watercolour paint or Ecoline. The oil pastels repel the water-based paint, so the drawn lines and areas remain visible.
• Sgraffito: apply the pastels thickly over the whole area, cover them with Talens Opaque Black and leave the layer to dry. Then scratch the design into it so that the colours underneath show through.

Set of 24 or set of 12?

The set of 12 covers the basic colours. The set of 24 adds intermediate shades such as pastel red, violet, Prussian blue, chromium oxide green, warm grey and dark brown. With these you will need to mix less often, and skies, foliage or skin tones can be graded more finely.
