Royal Talens Panda oil pastels – set of 12 soft oil pastel sticks

Royal Talens Panda oil pastels, set of 12 – soft pastels for paper, card and more

The Panda oil pastel set from Royal Talens contains 12 soft oil pastels for drawing and painting at school and at home. The pastels release their colour easily, and you apply them directly, with no sharpening or water. The paper wrappers keep your hands clean. According to Royal Talens, Panda oil pastels are used by children at school and at home all over the world.

The 12 colours cover the basics: you get white and black, three reds and oranges, lemon yellow and yellow ochre, two blues, two greens and light brown. You can create further shades by layering colours on the surface and blending them.

According to Royal Talens, all Panda colours meet the European toy safety standards.

What you can combine the oil pastels with

Royal Talens lists several techniques that work with Panda pastels. According to Royal Talens, suitable surfaces are paper, card, wood, drawing film, cellophane, unglazed earthenware, fabric and stone. On smooth surfaces such as film, the colour sits differently from the way it does on textured paper; a quick test on an offcut shows you the difference.

• You can combine the pastels with gouache or poster paint and watercolour in a single picture.
• Resist technique: draw with the pastels, then apply Talens Ecoline over the top. The area under the pastel does not take the colour, so the drawing stays visible.
• Sgraffito: apply the pastels heavily, cover them with Talens Opaque Black and leave everything to dry. Then scratch lines into the black layer with a pointed object so that the colours underneath show through.

Set of 12 or set of 24?

The set of 12 is enough for getting started and for school projects, because layering colours already gives you many in-between shades. The set of 24 in the series also includes violet, light pink and warm grey, among others, which are missing from the set of 12. If you need pure shades in these colours, choose the larger set.
