Talens Opaque Black – deep black paint for scratch art

Talens Opaque Black from Royal Talens is a deep black water-based paint for scratch art, also known as sgraffito. First colour an area with Wasco wax crayons or Panda oil pastels, cover it with the Opaque Black and, once it has dried, scratch lines or designs into the black layer. The colours underneath show through.

According to the manufacturer, the paint adheres well to waxy or oily surfaces, which is exactly what the wax and oil of the crayons and pastels provide. The bottle contains 50 ml.

Scratch art technique

First colour the area with Wasco wax crayons or Panda oil pastels, in several colours if you like, for example as stripes or blocks of colour. Then apply the Opaque Black evenly over the whole area with a brush and let the layer dry completely. Next, use a pointed object to scratch patterns, lines or pictures into the black, and the colours underneath appear.

Tips for use

The denser and stronger the colour layer underneath, the brighter the scratched lines will look. Do not scratch until the black is completely dry, otherwise the paint will smear. A blunter tool gives broader lines, a fine needle gives thin details.
