Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100 – drawing pencil in 24 degrees
The Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100 is a drawing pencil for sketching, hatching, drawing and writing on paper and matt drawing film. It is sold as a single pencil, and you choose the degree from the options. The range covers 24 grades from 12B to 10H, so you can find the right pencil for every line width and every shade of grey.
According to Staedtler, the lead is bonded firmly to the wood and made to a special formula. This makes it break-resistant, so you can shade firmly without the lead constantly snapping. The lines have a subtle metallic sheen in finely graded shades of grey. The wood comes from certified, sustainably managed forests (PEFC seal). The pencil is made in Germany.
Which degree to choose
B stands for soft, H for hard. Soft grades give deep, dark tones and blend easily, so they suit shading and loose sketches. Hard grades give light, fine lines that hardly smudge, and suit precise outlines and technical drawings. Staedtler grades the lead diameter by hardness: the softer the grade, the thicker the lead. If you want to draw a gradation, it is best to buy several neighbouring grades rather than just one pencil.
Sharpening and erasing
With very soft grades the point breaks off more easily if you press the pencil hard when sharpening. Turn it evenly and with light pressure in the sharpener. For a clean point, use the tub sharpener 511 001 or the metal sharpener 510 10 recommended by Staedtler. The Mars plastic 526 50 eraser is suitable for corrections.
