da Vinci CASANEO Series 498 Watercolour & Wash Brush

da Vinci CASANEO Series 498 – extra-soft round brush for watercolour and wash techniques

The CASANEO watercolour and wash brush, series 498 by da Vinci, is a round brush with extra-soft synthetic fibres for watercolour painting and wash techniques. The elastic fibres hold plenty of paint and water, so you can lay soft gradients, wash larger areas and work finer watercolour details.

The fibres are set in plastic quills and bound onto a short, black-lacquered handle. Choose your size from the options.

Working with the wash brush

For gradients and washes, first dampen the paper and then load the brush with plenty of diluted paint. Draw the paint across the surface in even strokes and keep a loose grip on the brush. The soft fibres put only little pressure on the paper, so transitions stay smooth. To soften edges, run the rinsed, only slightly damp brush along the boundary between two areas of colour. The brush is also suitable for calligraphy.

Which size to choose

The round shape holds a lot of water and releases it evenly. Smaller numbers suit details and small formats, larger numbers suit backgrounds and wide areas. For large gradients a bigger brush is worthwhile, because one stroke covers more area evenly and the paint does not dry before you continue.

Care

After painting, rinse the brush in clean water, reshape the tip and leave it to dry lying flat. Do not leave it standing in water with the bristles down, otherwise the fibres will bend.
