ARCHES Watercolour Block Grain Torchon – rough cotton paper for watercolour and acrylic

The ARCHES watercolour block with Grain Torchon surface is glued on one side and contains 12 sheets of 100% cotton watercolour paper. At 300 gsm, the paper is heavy enough for wet techniques such as watercolour, gouache, lavis and acrylic. The Grain Torchon surface is rough and natural white. Pigment settles into the hollows of the texture, giving brush strokes and washes a visible grain.

The paper is acid-free and lightfast, and it has very high ageing resistance. Your work will therefore keep its colour effect for a long time. Choose the size from the options.

Which techniques is the block suited to?

The rough texture of Grain Torchon suits landscapes, clouds, water or still lifes, where grain and pigment gradations are meant to stay visible. For very fine details such as hair, botanical subjects or architectural lines, a smoother surface is usually easier. Besides watercolour, you can also use gouache, lavis and acrylic.

Working with the block

The block is glued along one side, so the sheets stay fixed while you paint and dry flatter than loose sheets. To remove a sheet, wait until it is completely dry. Then carefully release it along the glued edge with a blunt knife. If you apply a lot of water, leave the sheet in the block until the end so that it cockles as little as possible.
