FineTec Pearlescent Colours Flip-Flop – 6 water-soluble colour-shift paints

The FineTec Pearlescent Colours Flip-Flop set of 6 is a metal tin containing six water-soluble, opaque paints whose shade changes with the light and the viewing angle. You can use them to add colour effects to painting, illustration and calligraphy.

The paints are based on purified gum arabic and pearlescent pigments. According to the manufacturer, they are highly pigmented and lightfast, and each shade contains only one colouring pigment. The set contains the shades Red|Gold (7900), Pink|Orange (7901), Turquoise|Red (7902), Gold Green|Pink (7903), Green|Amethyst (7904) and Blue|Violet (2493). You mix colours in the mixing wells in the lid of the tin, and the paint pans are interchangeable.

Working with Flip-Flop paints

The paints are activated with water and applied with a brush. They are suitable for painting, illustration and calligraphy.

• Wet the brush and dissolve the paint in the pan.
• Mix shades together in the mixing wells in the lid.
• Apply to paper, card or another absorbent surface and leave to dry.
• Once dry, tilt the sheet in the light: only then does the colour shift from one shade to the other show.

In this set of 6, every paint is a Flip-Flop colour. The set of 24 watercolour paints in the range mainly contains classic pearlescent colours and only 2 Flip-Flop colours. If the colour shift matters more to you than a wide choice, the set of 6 is the better option. Thanks to their high opacity, the shades stay clearly visible even over other layers.
