Caran d'Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle – wax pastel for drawing and watercolour effects

The Caran d'Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle is a water-soluble wax pastel (wax-oil pastel) sold as a single colour. You can buy just the shades you need or add to a set you already have. The range comprises 84 colours, including three metallic colours. Choose your colour from the options.

According to Caran d'Ache, the pastel has a soft, velvety texture without dust, offers very good coverage and has excellent lightfastness. The colours are vivid, and you can mix them on the paper. The pastel is Swiss Made and complies with ASTM D4236.

Working with the Neocolor II

You can use the pastel dry like a wax crayon or wet like watercolour paint. For soft transitions, first draw the area and then go over it with a damp brush. The colour dissolves and flows like watercolour. You can also dampen the brush and pick up colour directly from the pastel.

Choosing and care

As a single pastel, the Neocolor II is useful for adding to sets or for projects with only a few shades. The metallic colours add accents to drawings. When used wet, thin paper cockles easily, while thicker paper stays flatter. The colour can be washed out of clothing with a suitable detergent at a low temperature, and removed from hands and tables with soapy water.
