Caran d'Ache watercolour mixing palette – smooth and rough sides for mixing

The Caran d'Ache mixing palette is a white Plexiglas palette in travel size (26 × 13 cm) for mixing watercolour, gouache, acrylic and oil paints. It has two different sides: you use the smooth side for all the paint types mentioned. The rough side is designed for making paint from dry water-soluble media, as the pigments cling to it.

At just 3 mm thick, the palette fits easily into a paint box or portfolio. The manufacturer lists it for Museum Aquarelle, Technalo, Supracolor Soft, Prismalo Aquarelle and Neocolor II. It also works with Albrecht Dürer.

Using both sides

On the smooth side, you mix gouache, acrylic, oil or watercolour as on an ordinary palette. For watercolour pencils or Neocolor II, rub the lead over the rough side to create dust. Spread this with a wet brush and mix it with water to make watercolour paint. That way you get the shade in exactly the amount you need. After painting, simply clean the palette with water. According to Caran d'Ache, it is resistant to alcohol, acetone, UV and abrasion.
