The Hahnemühle Mixed Media Universal Pad is a painting pad with 25 sheets in 24 × 32 cm format for watercolour, acrylic and gouache paints. The natural white, fine-grain paper weighs 310 g/m² and is internally sized. This means the paint does not sink deep into the paper straight away, and you can work wet-on-wet.

The pad is glued on all four sides. The paper stays taut while you paint and lies flat, even if you use a lot of water. You do not need to stretch it separately. According to Hahnemühle, the paper is acid-free, lightfast, age-resistant and vegan, so your work keeps its colour for a long time.

Which techniques is the pad suitable for?

At 310 g/m², the paper is much sturdier than ordinary drawing paper. For watercolour, you apply paint in transparent layers and let gradients run into each other. Acrylic can also be applied more thickly, and gouache gives strong, opaque areas of colour. If you want to combine several techniques, you can stay with one paper and do not need to switch.

Working with the glued pad

Paint directly on the pad and let the sheet dry completely before you remove it from the pad. This keeps the paper smooth as it dries, because the glued edges hold it in place. When painting with watercolour, it helps to tilt the pad slightly so the paint flows in gradients. With 25 sheets, you can make several colour sketches and test applications before working up your motif at your leisure.
