The Caran d'Ache Neopastel Extra-Fine Oil Pastels in the set of 12 are round artists' oil pastels for drawing, sketching, illustration and mixed-media work. The pastels have a soft, velvety texture and a matt finish. The colours cover well and are easy to blend and layer. Caran d'Ache uses extra-fine pigments and inert oil. According to the manufacturer, the pastels do not crumble and are water-resistant.

The set contains 12 colours with the numbers 001, 003, 009, 059, 035, 010, 230, 210, 161, 140, 090 and 070. Caran d'Ache states the colour number and the lightfastness of each shade, so you can buy individual colours again later. The complete Neopastel palette comprises 96 shades.

Working with Neopastel

Use the tip for lines and details, the slanted edge for broader strokes and the broad side to cover areas. Because the colours are opaque, you can layer shades and blend them together with your finger. For a painterly effect, dissolve the pastel on the paper with a brush and a little white spirit. Test on an offcut first to see how your paper reacts.

Choosing a set

The set of 12 is a manageable introduction to oil pastels and is enough for sketches and smaller subjects. If you need finer gradations, the same series is also available as a set of 24, 48 and 96. The set of 96 contains the complete palette.
