Schmincke Turpentine Substitute for Oil Painting

Schmincke turpentine substitute – thins oil paints and cleans brushes

Schmincke turpentine substitute is a solvent blend with properties similar to turpentine and a mild odour. You can use it to thin oil paints, oil painting mediums and white spirit-based varnishes, and to clean brushes and palettes after painting. Choose the container size from the options.

The turpentine substitute contains white spirit and dissolves natural resins such as dammar as well as synthetic resins. It is not compatible with alcohol-based varnishes, so use it only for white spirit-based mixtures. It is not intended for acrylic paints.

Thinning oil paint

Add only a little turpentine substitute to the paint until it reaches the consistency you want. You need more thinner for glazes, transparent layers and fine colour gradients. When building up several layers, work lean to fat: the lower layers leaner, meaning with more thinner, and the upper layers fatter. Test first on a sample piece, especially if you are mixing in oil painting mediums or varnishes.

Cleaning brushes and storing the turpentine substitute

Wipe off excess paint with kitchen paper and rinse the brush in the turpentine substitute. Then wash it out thoroughly. The same applies to palette knives and palettes. Close the bottle immediately after use and store it in a cool, dry place.
