Schmincke cleaner for oil paintings – gently removing surface dirt

The Schmincke cleaner for oil paintings is a pasty, wax-containing, colourless emulsion. It removes surface dirt from fully dried oil paintings. The product is intended for experts, and a preliminary test is required before every use.

The cleaner is ready to use and can be diluted with water if needed. The 35 ml is enough for targeted cleaning of small areas, such as soiled spots on a painting.

Application

Apply the cleaner sparingly to a small area and leave it on the surface of the painting only briefly. Take particular care with thickly painted pictures: rubbing too hard can damage the surface mechanically.

• Check beforehand that the paint layer is sufficiently bound and adheres well to the support.
• Test the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot, for example at the edge of the picture in the rebate of the decorative frame.
• Apply it with a soft, lint-free cloth and remove the dirt by rubbing lightly.
• Make sure that no upper paint layers are dissolved in the process.
• Schmincke recommends careful after-treatment with turpentine or white spirit.

When to consult a restorer

For valuable oil paintings, you should leave the cleaning of the surface to a qualified restorer. Close the tube again immediately after use and store it in a cool, dry place.
