Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Chalk – graphite chalk for large sketches and areas
Pitt Graphite Chalk from Faber-Castell is a graphite chalk for sketching and for graphic work and covering large areas. It gives a rich, intense mark and is also suitable for frottage techniques.
According to Faber-Castell, it is a medium for very large sketches and areas, with high coverage. For large-format studies you do not necessarily need several thin pencils. The chalk comes in four grades; choose the one you want from the options.
Which grade should you choose?
Pitt Graphite Chalk is available in grades 2B, 4B, 6B and 9B. The higher the number, the softer the chalk and the darker and stronger the mark. The grades range from very soft and black to extra soft and deep black. The softer grades are good for deep shadows and broad areas, while the middle grades suit sketches with more mid-tones. How dark the result is also depends on the pressure you apply.
Working with the chalk
For large areas, lay the chalk flat and draw it broadly across the paper. The edge gives narrower, graphic lines.
- For frottage, place thin paper over a texture such as wood, foliage or fabric and rub over it with the flat side.
- Graphite smudges easily. Protect finished drawings with fixative or put tissue paper between them.
- A test on your own paper shows you beforehand how dark the mark will be.
