JAXELL Soft Pastels, set of 72 – soft, square sticks for drawing and blending

The set contains 72 JAXELL Soft Pastels by Honsell. You can use them to draw and paint areas of colour, gradients, backgrounds and accents in pastel work. The sticks are square. Use the broad side to cover large areas, and the edge or tip for lines and details.

According to Honsell, the soft pastels in this range are softer than most Carré pastels. They go on richly with high colour intensity and are lightfast. Thanks to their soft texture, they smudge easily and blend finely into one another. With 72 sticks you have a large assortment, from which you can use many shades straight from the set or mix them.

Working with soft pastels

For large areas, lay the stick flat and draw it across the paper with the broad side. For outlines and details, use the edge or tip. To blend, rub the colours together with a finger or a blending stump. As the pastels can be used with water, you can also let them run with a damp brush. It is best to work from dark to light shades and add the highlights last. Pastel adheres better to paper with a slight grain than to smooth paper. As pastel creates dust, store finished work as flat as possible and protect it with fixative or a sheet of paper.

Combining and choosing

According to Honsell, the range combines well with watercolour paint, red chalk, charcoal and acrylic paint. For example, you can lay in coloured backgrounds and add the details with other media. The 72 sticks suit school, hobby and studio use. If you would like to start with fewer colours, the range is also available in smaller assortments.
