Botz 9224 Aventurin liquid glaze is a glossy, reddish brown glaze with glitter effects for bisque-fired ceramics. It is ready to use and is applied with a brush. It gives the most pronounced effects when applied unevenly, and it looks particularly interesting on dark clay.

Aventurin is one of the Botz liquid glazes for earthenware in the 1020–1100 °C range and is fired at 1020–1060 °C. The glaze runs heavily and tends to crackle (fine cracks in the glaze). Allow for this from the start, both when applying and when firing.

Applying Aventurin

Stir the glaze well and thin it with a little water if needed. Apply it with a brush to the bisque-fired piece and let each layer dry thoroughly. Two to three coats give a solid, even area of colour. If you want to emphasise the glitter effects, work deliberately unevenly, as the effects then show up more strongly.

Allowing for running and crackle

Aventurin runs heavily. Leave the foot of the piece and the lower part of the wall unglazed, and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash or a waster slab. The crackle appears because the glaze and the clay body shrink differently as they cool. With this glaze it is part of the look. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the colour and effects turn out with your application.
