Botz 9342 Wasserblau Liquid Glaze – Semi-Transparent Light Blue with Crackle
Botz liquid glaze 9342 Wasserblau is a glossy, semi-transparent glaze in a light aqua blue for bisque-fired ceramics in the firing range 1020–1060 °C. It forms fine crackle during firing, a network of cracks in the glaze layer, and is also suitable for raku.
Crackle appears because glaze and clay body shrink by different amounts as they cool. Here the cracks are part of the glaze's effect. As Wasserblau is semi-transparent, the clay shows through: according to Botz, the glaze is particularly interesting on red and black clay. A test piece made before the actual piece will show you how the blue looks on your clay.
Applying the glaze
The glaze is intended for bisque-fired ceramics. The bisque firing should have been carried out at a minimum of 950 °C.
- Stir the glaze well before use
- Thin with a little water if needed
- Apply to the bisque-fired ceramics with a brush
- Leave to dry thoroughly and apply another coat if needed
- Fire in the firing range 1020–1060 °C
Things to bear in mind
If you glaze a piece inside and outside, the glaze may blister on some clays. Test this beforehand on a test piece made from your clay. Wasserblau is suitable for raku, but here too the effect of the crackle and the shade of blue depend on the clay and the firing process. On red and black clay the semi-transparent glaze looks different from how it looks on a light clay body; a test piece will show you the result.
