Botz 9541 Goldglasur – glossy, metallic gold, up to 1040 °C

Botz 9541 Goldglasur liquid glaze is a glossy, opaque, metallic gold glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. You apply it with a brush and get a solid-coloured surface that tends to form fine cracks (crackle) in the firing.

Important before you buy: this glaze is temperature-sensitive and may only be fired up to 1040 °C. It is therefore not suitable for a firing with glazes that need higher temperatures. The hold time is 5 minutes.

Using the Goldglasur

Stir the glaze well before applying, as metallic pigments settle. If needed, you can thin it with a little water. Apply it with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing at 950 °C minimum), let the coat dry thoroughly and repeat the application if needed.

• Fire to 1040 °C maximum, hold time 5 minutes
• Place the piece towards the bottom of the kiln
• Ensure a supply of oxygen and do not pack the kiln too tightly

Keeping runs and cracks under control

The glaze has a strong tendency to run. Do not apply it too thickly, leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. The cracks occur because glaze and clay body shrink at different rates as they cool. With this glaze they are part of the look. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how application thickness and placement in the kiln affect the result.
