Mayco Designer Liner SG405 green – fine lines and lettering on ceramics
The Mayco Designer Liner SG405 in green is a clay-based, highly pigmented ceramic colour in a 37 ml bottle with a metal writing tip. You can apply fine or bold lines, lettering and illustrations to ceramics straight from the bottle, with no extra brush.
Without a glaze over it, the liner fires matt. It works best under a transparent or semi-transparent glaze that does not run, so the lines stay crisp. You can also use the colour with a brush for watercolour or ink-wash effects.
Working with the liner
You can apply the liner to greenware, to bisque or to surfaces that are already glazed. Draw the tip along in one stroke with even pressure and the line will be consistent. The liner is not dimensional: do not apply it too thickly, as thick lines can crack during firing and may flake off. If the tip dries out, it can become blocked. Put the cap back on the bottle straight after use.
- Draw lettering and fine patterns directly from the bottle.
- Use a brush for soft gradients.
- For a top glaze, choose a transparent or semi-transparent glaze that does not run.
Firing and choosing
The liner can be fired from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) up to cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The result depends on the surface and on the glaze you put over it. Make a test piece first if you want to match colour and finish to a particular glaze. SG405 belongs to the Mayco Designer Liner series, which comes in ten colours (SG401 to SG410). Choose green when you want to add details and accents in this colour.
