Mayco UG-227 Concord Grape – dark purple underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-227 Concord Grape is a dark purple underglaze for decorating ceramics. You can use it to fill areas, shade, draw outlines and paint floral or graphic designs. The shade is a warm, rich grape purple. Without a glaze, the colour fires matt. Under clear glaze it becomes more intense and glossy.

The underglaze is intended for greenware or bisque. According to Mayco, you can also apply it to wet or leather-hard clay and then fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour does not change according to Mayco. Mayco recommends a test with your own clay and your own kiln.

Applying the underglaze

Shake the jar well before use. One coat is translucent; for full depth of colour you need 2–3 coats according to Mayco. Let each coat dry before applying the next. This gives you an even application of colour, even on large areas. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another, so you can adjust the shade of the purple.

Clear glaze and dinnerware

Clear or matt glaze intensifies the colour. Mayco also allows underglaze and clear glaze to be combined in a single firing. If blisters or craters form, a hold time of 15 minutes helps according to Mayco. For dinnerware, the following applies: the underglaze is only suitable for dinnerware under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze, it is not intended for dinnerware. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: exempt from hazard labelling.
