Mayco Elements Stormy Blue EL-124 – blue-grey effect glaze with colour gradients
Mayco Elements EL-124 Stormy Blue is an effect glaze in cool blue and grey tones, applied to bisque-fired ceramics. Depending on the thickness of the coat and the firing temperature, it gives soft colour gradients through to strong movement in the glossy surface. It suits textured, rustic or nature-inspired decorative pieces.
The glaze contains crystals that settle in the jar, so shake and stir it thoroughly before each use. Stormy Blue runs heavily and is not compatible with overglazes. Not suitable for spraying.
How to apply Stormy Blue
Apply the glaze to bisque-fired ceramics. Several even coats give full colour coverage and the typical gradients.
- Bisque firing at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Shake the glaze and stir thoroughly so that the crystals are evenly distributed
- Apply 2–3 even coats with a fan brush, letting each coat dry before the next
- Stir the crystals up again for the third coat if needed
- Allow to dry thoroughly before firing
Firing and preventing runs
The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The glaze is fired at cone 06/05, i.e. approx. 998 °C to approx. 1031 °C (guide values per Orton chart). Because Stormy Blue runs heavily, apply it more thinly on the lower third of vertical surfaces and leave the foot bare. Crystals should not sit near the base of the piece, as they can run there. Place the piece on a waster slab in the kiln.
For decorative use only
Stormy Blue is intended for decorative ceramics such as display bowls, vases, figures and textured work. Do not use it for tableware or for vessels that come into contact with food, as the surface may crackle.
