Mayco Elements EL-119 Burnished Steel – metallic dark grey glaze for decorative ceramics

Mayco Elements EL-119 Burnished Steel is a brush-on liquid glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. At cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) it gives a matt, metallic dark grey, according to Mayco. The glaze contains crystals that settle. Stir it well before each use to bring the settled particles back into suspension.

The glaze is intended for decorative purposes only. It is not suitable for dinnerware or for contact with food (Not Dinnerware Safe). For cups, plates or bowls that are used for eating or drinking, choose a different glaze.

Applying Burnished Steel

Apply the glaze to bisque-fired ceramics. It is ready to use.

• Shake the container and stir thoroughly so that the crystals are distributed.
• Apply several even coats with a fan brush and let each coat dry.
• For the last coats, stir the crystals up again in between so that the coverage stays even.
• Let the glaze dry thoroughly, then fire.

Firing and flow

Fire at cone 06 to 05 (approx. 998 °C to approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, the glaze runs. On upright pieces, apply it more thinly on the lower third and leave the foot free so that it does not run off. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the glaze turns metallic black, pools as a flat metallic grey and runs even more; surface defects may occur.
