Mayco UG-234 Ivory Pearl – light ivory underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-234 Ivory Pearl is a light ivory underglaze for decorating ceramics. You apply it to greenware or bisque; according to Mayco, it can also be used on wet or leather-hard clay. Without glaze it fires matt, and under clear glaze the colour becomes more intense. The pot contains 59 ml (2 oz).

Ivory Pearl belongs to the Mayco Fundamentals Underglazes series. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another, so you can also adjust the shade yourself.

Applying Ivory Pearl

The colour is intended for brush application. How many coats you need depends on the effect you want: one coat stays translucent, while 2–3 coats give full coverage.

• Shake the pot well before use
• Apply with a brush, do not spray
• Let each coat dry before applying the next
• Apply 2–3 coats for an even shade

Firing and colour effect

For the series, Mayco gives cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). On wet or leather-hard clay, according to Mayco, you fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The colour changes with temperature: at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) Ivory Pearl becomes slightly darker, and at cone 10 it turns into a white with a turquoise tinge. A test with your own clay and your own kiln will show you how the result turns out for you.

Clear glaze intensifies the colour. You can fire it together with the underglaze in a single firing. If blisters or craters form, according to Mayco a hold time of 15 minutes helps.

For dinnerware: Ivory Pearl is only suitable for dinnerware under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze, it is not dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal means that the product is non-hazardous (no labelling required).
