Botz PRO 9308 Carneolgelb – yellow liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9308 Carneolgelb is a ready-to-use yellow brush-on glaze for earthenware and stoneware. The surface is glossy and semi-transparent. The wide firing range of 1020–1280 °C means you can use the same glaze for earthenware firing and for high firing.
The result depends on the firing temperature: from 1020 °C, according to Botz, the PRO colours become strong and almost opaque. Around 1150 °C the colour is retained and the surface becomes more semi-transparent. In high firing around 1250 °C, the PRO range shows glassy, semi-transparent surfaces in pastel shades, and Botz also reports good results on porcelain at 1250 °C. Because the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay body affects the result. A test piece will show you beforehand how the yellow looks on your clay.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto bisque-fired ceramics. How many coats you apply depends on the firing temperature.
- Firing from 1020 °C: apply 2–3 coats
- Firing around 1150 °C: apply 2 coats
- Leave the glaze to dry for a day before firing
- Recommended firing temperature according to Botz: 1050 °C for earthenware, 1250 °C for stoneware, each with a 10–20 minute hold
- Ventilate the kiln room well and vent kiln fumes directly outdoors
Preventing runs
Carneolgelb tends to run when applied thickly. It is better to apply several thin coats than one thick coat, and to leave the foot of the piece unglazed. This keeps the kiln shelf clean. Kiln wash under the piece protects it further.
Suitability for tableware
Botz recommends the PRO glazes for tableware from approx. 1200 °C. In the earthenware range of 1020–1100 °C, many clays are not yet watertight. You should not use such ceramics for liquids over a long period or leave them outdoors in frost. Botz recommends hand washing.
