Botz PRO 9622 Amethyst – violet liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9622 Amethyst is a ready-to-use liquid glaze in a glossy, semi-transparent violet. You can use it across a very wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C, so it works on earthenware, early-vitrifying clay, stoneware and porcelain. If you fire different clays, you do not need a separate glaze for each temperature.
The colour depends on the firing temperature. In the earthenware range from 1020 °C, Amethyst turns a strong colour and is almost opaque. At around 1150 °C the colour is retained, but the surface becomes semi-transparent. At high-fire temperatures the glaze gives a glassy, semi-transparent surface in an intense pastel shade. Because it is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay also affects the result. A test tile made from your clay will show you beforehand how the glaze looks on it.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush to the clean, bisque-fired clay body. Let each coat dry properly before applying the next. How many coats you apply depends on the firing temperature:
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): 2–3 coats, almost opaque, strong colour
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): 2 coats, semi-transparent surface, colour retained
- High fire up to 1280 °C and on porcelain at 1250 °C: 2 coats, glassy and semi-transparent in an intense pastel shade
Avoiding runs
When applied thickly, Amethyst tends to run, especially from 1150 °C. It is therefore better to apply the glaze in several thin coats rather than one thick one, and to leave a narrow strip unglazed at the foot of the piece. You can also protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash or a waster slab. For decoration, the glaze can also be combined with Botz Unidekor, according to Botz.
