Botz PRO 9310 Malachit – deep bottle green glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9310 Malachit is a ready-to-use brush-on liquid glaze in a deep dark green, similar to classic bottle green. It is glossy, semi-transparent and can be used across a wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C. That makes it suitable for earthenware as well as stoneware, if you want one glaze to cover several clays and kilns. Botz also recommends Malachit for dinnerware, and the glaze is suitable for raku.
The pot contains 200 ml. The glaze is made in Germany and, according to Botz, combines well with Botz Unidekor.
Firing temperature and application
The effect of Malachit depends on how hot you fire and how many coats you apply. Stir the glaze well before applying it. As it is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay affects the result. A test tile made from your own clay will show you in advance how the green turns out.
- From approx. 1050 °C (earthenware): apply 2 to 3 coats; the glaze becomes coloured and almost opaque
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): apply 2 coats; the surface becomes more semi-transparent
- Around 1250 °C (high firing, stoneware): apply 2 coats; the surface becomes glassy and semi-transparent
Avoiding runs
When applied thickly, the glaze tends to run from about 1150 °C. It is therefore better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat, and to leave the foot of the piece unglazed. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash in case some glaze does run off.
Choosing from the range
Botz PRO is available in 200 ml and 800 ml. Besides Malachit, the series includes other colours such as Topasblau, Onyxschwarz, Pyrit Weiß and Rauchquarz. If you are glazing dinnerware, check the information on processing and firing for your clay body.
