Botz PRO 9620 Rubinrot – glossy liquid glaze for 1020–1280 °C

Botz PRO 9620 Rubinrot is a red brush-on liquid glaze with a glossy, semi-transparent finish. It belongs to the Botz PRO series and can be used across a very wide firing range, from 1020 to 1280 °C. This means you can glaze earthenware and stoneware with the same glaze, and according to Botz, the PRO series also gives lovely results on porcelain at 1250 °C.

The colour changes with the firing temperature. As the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay body also affects the result. A test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the red turns out for you.

Choosing the firing temperature

According to Botz, the PRO series behaves differently depending on the firing range:

• From 1020 °C (earthenware): coloured and almost opaque, apply 2 to 3 coats
• Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): the colour is retained, the surface becomes more semi-transparent, apply 2 coats
• High firing up to 1280 °C (stoneware): glassy, semi-transparent surface; lovely results on porcelain at 1250 °C

Application and preventing runs

Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto a clean, dust-free, bisque-fired piece. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Rubinrot tends to run when applied thickly from 1150 °C. For this reason, apply the glaze more thinly on the lower third of the piece, leave the foot unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. If you would like to add decoration, according to Botz the glaze combines well with Botz Unidekor.
