Mayco Stoneware SW-218 Micro Ash – stoneware glaze with charcoal tone and micro crystals
With the Micro Ash (SW-218) stoneware glaze from the Mayco Stoneware range, you can finish decorative ceramics with a glossy, transparent charcoal surface. At 1230 °C it gives a variegated charcoal glaze with a periwinkle float that breaks over textures. During firing, blooms of shimmering onyx micro crystallisation form.
The glaze is intended for decorative pieces. It is not suitable for dinnerware or for contact with food, because the surface durability is limited. The glaze comes in a 473 ml (16 fl oz) bottle and can be used in oxidation and reduction firing.
Firing and colour effect
The result depends heavily on temperature. At 1230 °C you get the glossy, transparent charcoal glaze with a periwinkle float and onyx micro crystals. At approx. 1305 °C it turns darker. For crystal development, Mayco recommends firing the Micro glazes to cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation. This gives a stable, semi-opaque, warm charcoal result that breaks over textures. Clay body, application thickness, firing process and temperature change the result considerably, so make a test piece on your own clay in your own kiln to be sure.
Applying the glaze
The glaze tends to run when applied in three coats. Apply only as much as necessary and keep the foot of the piece free of glaze.
- Stir the glaze well before use so that the colour particles are evenly distributed.
- Brush on 2–3 coats; if the glaze tends to run, use fewer coats.
- As the glaze is transparent, work evenly and at the same thickness, otherwise brush strokes will remain visible.
- Do not apply by spraying.
