Botz stoneware glaze 9896 Ockergranit – satin ochre yellow with black speckles

Fire the liquid stoneware glaze Ockergranit (9896) from Botz at 1220–1280 °C and you get a satin, light ochre-yellow surface with fine black speckles. The glaze is opaque, so you do not need an additional engobe to show the colour. The black speckles remain visible across the whole firing range and give the surface a lively, granite-like texture.

According to Botz, the high firing temperature makes the stoneware glaze frost-resistant and watertight, so it does not absorb water. That makes it interesting for ceramics that stand outdoors, such as plant pots or garden decorations.

How the glaze looks at different temperatures

The firing temperature changes the gloss and the shade. If you want a particular look, choose the temperature accordingly:

• 1220 °C: soft matt ochre yellow with fine black speckles
• 1250 °C: satin, light ochre yellow with fine black speckles
• 1280 °C: satin, pastel ochre yellow with fine black speckles

Application and firing

Stir the glaze thoroughly before applying so that the pigment and speckles are evenly distributed. Apply it with a brush in two to three coats, preferably three, and let each coat dry well before applying the next. Firing is best done at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the colour and speckles turn out for you.
