Botz Stoneware Glaze 9873 Zinnoberrot – bright, opaque medium red

Botz stoneware glaze 9873 Zinnoberrot is a liquid, glossy glaze for stoneware in a bright, opaque medium red. You apply it with a brush and fire it in the firing range of 1220 to 1280 °C. At this high temperature the stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-resistant and no longer absorbs water. That makes the glaze suitable for vessels, bowls and figures that can also stand outdoors.

Zinnoberrot gives good coverage when applied fully. If you apply the glaze very thinly, the clay body shows through transparently. You can use this for gradients, for example on edges and rims where the red should fade out more softly.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use, as the pigments settle at the bottom. Apply it to the bisque-fired piece with a brush in 2 to 3 coats, ideally three, so that the red covers evenly. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Applying too thin a coat is the most common cause of uneven, see-through patches.

Colour effect and choice

Zinnoberrot is a glossy solid colour without crackle or texture. If you want a translucent red with a gradient, apply it more thinly. For a full, bright red, work with three coats. Make a test piece from your own clay beforehand and fire it at your usual temperature, as clay colour and firing schedule affect the result.
