Botz 9889 Indigo stoneware glaze – glossy effect glaze from sea green to light blue

Botz 9889 Indigo is a liquid, glossy stoneware effect glaze for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It gives a cloudy play of colour from sea green to a strong light blue. The colour depends on the thickness of the coat: applied thinly it looks greener, and the thicker you apply it, the more the blue comes through. Deliberately uneven application creates blue running effects.

Thanks to the high firing temperature, stoneware with this glaze becomes frost-proof and watertight according to Botz, so it does not absorb water. At 1220 °C the surface is more satin, and at higher temperatures it is glossier.

Application

Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto the bisque-fired piece. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next.

• Apply 2–3 coats, preferably 3
• For a firing at 1280 °C, apply only 2 coats at the bottom of the piece
• Recommended: 1250 °C with a 30 min hold

Controlling colour and running

For more sea green, apply thinner coats; for more light blue, apply thicker ones. The blue running effects appear mainly where the glaze is applied more thickly. Leave the foot unglazed and do not apply too much on the lower part of the piece, so that the glaze does not run onto the kiln shelf and stick. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how coat thickness and firing temperature affect the result.
