Botz stoneware glaze 9891 Grüngranit – satin green with fine effects

Botz stoneware glaze 9891 Grüngranit is an opaque liquid glaze for stoneware with a firing range of 1220–1280 °C. At 1250 °C, the recommended firing temperature, it gives a strong, satin green with fine light and dark effects. The surface looks slightly speckled and lively rather than flat and even.

Fired within its firing range, the glaze becomes frost-proof and vitrified, so it cannot absorb water. This makes it suitable for pieces that stand outdoors, such as plant pots or garden ceramics.

Application

Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto the bisque-fired blank. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Apply 2–3 coats, preferably 3. If you fire at 1250 °C, 2 coats are enough on the lower part of the piece. Leave the foot ring unglazed so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf.

Choosing the firing temperature

The appearance depends clearly on the temperature. A test piece on your own clay shows you beforehand how the glaze looks in your firing.

• 1220 °C: greenish grey, heavily interspersed with anthracite-coloured effects, satin matt
• 1250 °C: strong, satin green with fine light and dark effects
• 1280 °C: satin green with effects, apply only 2 coats; if the coat is uneven in thickness, subtle running effects appear
