Botz PRO 9311 Topasblau – blue liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9311 Topasblau is a glossy blue liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware. It is semi-transparent and can be used across a very wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C. This means you can fire the same glaze at a low earthenware temperature or as a high firing. The 800 ml container is enough for larger quantities of ceramics.
The glaze is a single solid colour and is applied with a brush. How opaque and how intense the colour turns out depends on the firing temperature and the number of coats.
How the glaze looks at different temperatures
The wide firing range is the advantage of the PRO series: you choose the temperature to suit your clay and the look you want. The figures apply to the PRO series as a whole; the colour turns out slightly different depending on the clay and the firing.
- From approx. 1050 °C (earthenware): becomes coloured and almost opaque, 2–3 coats recommended
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): stays coloured, the surface becomes more semi-transparent, 2 coats recommended
- High firing up to 1280 °C (stoneware): glassy, semi-transparent surface in intense pastel shades, 2 coats recommended
- On porcelain at 1250 °C the series also gives attractive results
Application and avoiding runs
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it evenly with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The glaze tends to run when applied thickly, especially at higher temperatures from about 1150 °C. It is therefore better to apply several thin layers than one thick one. Leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. On earthenware, multiple coats build up the opacity; for high firing, two coats are sufficient.
Combining and planning quantities
According to Botz, the PRO series combines well with Botz Unidekor, for example for decorations on the clay body. The 800 ml container is intended for workshops, courses and many pieces. The colour is also available in 200 ml. A test piece made from your own clay shows you in advance how Topasblau looks at your firing temperature.
