Botz PRO 9621 Feueropal – glossy liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware

Botz PRO glaze 9621 Feueropal is a liquid, glossy brush-on glaze in orange to red for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. It can be used across a wide firing range of 1020–1280 °C. So you don't need to buy a separate glaze for each clay, as long as you adjust the firing temperature to the effect you want.

The glaze belongs to the Botz PRO series and, according to Botz, combines well with Botz Unidekor. The same glaze is also available in a 200 ml tin. The 800 ml size suits larger quantities or several pieces.

Firing temperature and application: how Feueropal changes

Colour and opacity depend on the firing temperature. Apply the glaze to clean, bisque-fired ceramics and let each coat dry before applying the next.

• From 1020 °C (earthenware): The glaze takes on its colour and is almost opaque. Botz recommends 2–3 coats.
• Around 1150 °C (e.g. early-vitrifying clays): The colour is retained and the surface becomes more semi-transparent. Botz recommends 2 coats.
• In a high firing at 1250–1280 °C: The result is a glassy, semi-transparent surface in intense pastel shades. On porcelain at 1250 °C, too, the glaze gives attractive results according to Botz.

Avoiding runs

Feueropal tends to run when applied thickly, especially from 1150 °C. Apply several thin coats rather than one thick one, and leave a margin free at the foot of the piece. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash in case some glaze does run down. If you want to combine the glaze with Botz Unidekor, make a test piece on your clay first, because the colour of the clay body affects the semi-transparent effect.
