Botz Stoneware Glaze 9899 Travertin – satin ochre with blue-green effects
Botz Travertin (9899) is a liquid stoneware glaze for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It fires to a satin ochre with blue-green effects and has a very earthy character. Botz recommends it for tableware and drinking vessels. It comes in a 200 ml tin, a handy size for single pieces and test firings.
The glaze is opaque and looks textured to lightly speckled. At a high firing temperature, stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-resistant, so it no longer absorbs water. That also makes Travertin interesting for outdoor items such as plant pots.
How the glaze looks at different temperatures
The play of colour depends on the firing temperature. If you want to make use of the effect deliberately, fire a test piece in your own clay, as the colour of the clay body influences the result.
- 1220 °C: satin matt, slightly greenish ochre-yellow glaze with a very fine play of effects
- 1250 °C: satin, mainly ochre with cream and blue effects; terracotta orange shows through where applied very thinly
- 1280 °C: satin with a particularly attractive play of ochre and blue-green; terracotta orange shows through where applied very thinly and on edges
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use. Apply it with a brush in 2–3 coats, preferably 2, and let each coat dry thoroughly. Thicker coats change the play of colour and are more likely to run at 1280 °C. Botz recommends 1 thicker coat to 2 coats there. Fire at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold if you want the balanced mix of ochre, cream and blue. If you would like to see more terracotta on thin areas and edges, apply the glaze more thinly there on purpose.
