Botz stoneware glaze 9890 Türkisgranit – satin turquoise with pale speckles

Botz stoneware glaze 9890 Türkisgranit is a liquid glaze for stoneware. It gives your ceramics a satin turquoise finish with fine pale speckles and covers well. It is made for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. At these temperatures the glaze becomes vitrified, absorbs no water and is frost-resistant.

The speckles are part of the look. How strongly they show, and whether the turquoise looks more greenish or more bluish, depends on the firing temperature. With the 200 ml pot you can first test the colour on a test piece made from your own clay.

Which firing temperature to choose

Botz recommends 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold. The colour changes within the firing range:

• 1220 °C: satin matt, greenish turquoise
• 1250 °C: satin turquoise with pale effects
• 1280 °C: the effects become stronger and the turquoise takes on a bluish glow

Application

Stir the glaze well before use. Apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush, preferably 3, and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Work evenly: coats of uneven thickness show up as colour differences after firing.

Firing tips

Leave the base of the piece unglazed so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf. A test piece made from your clay will show you beforehand how the speckles and the shade develop at your firing temperature.
