Botz Stoneware Glaze 9898 Eiskristall – satin cream with blue effects

Eiskristall (9898) is a liquid, satin stoneware glaze from Botz for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It is opaque and cream-coloured. From 1250 °C, glossy blue effects develop in the glaze. How strongly they appear depends on the firing temperature.

Fired at a high temperature, the stoneware becomes frost-proof and watertight according to Botz and absorbs no water. This also makes the glaze suitable for vessels and garden ceramics that are kept outdoors.

Which firing temperature to choose

Eiskristall changes noticeably with temperature. A test tile made from your own clay shows you beforehand which result you prefer.

• 1220 °C: satin matt, slightly yellowish cream glaze with very fine effects
• 1250 °C: satin cream glaze with white and light blue effects
• 1280 °C: satin cream glaze interspersed with blue areas, some of them large

Application

Stir the glaze well before use and apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush, according to Botz preferably 2. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. At 1280 °C, a deliberately uneven application gives the glaze a lively surface with a stronger play of colour. For a more even surface, apply it as evenly as possible instead. Fire at the recommended temperature of 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold.
