Botz Engobe 9820 Sunset – matt stoneware engobe, opaque and crisp-edged
Botz stoneware engobe 9820 Sunset is a liquid, matt engobe for adding colour to stoneware. It belongs to the Botz Edition stoneware engobe range, comes in a 200 ml tub and is intended for the firing range 1180–1280 °C. The colour covers well and keeps sharp contours, so it suits areas as well as lines and motifs.
Without an additional glaze, the engobe has a soft matt, earthy look. If you apply a clear glaze over it, the result is more intense in colour and glossy. The engobe can be mixed with other colours in the Edition range, so you can create your own shades.
Applying the engobe
Stir the engobe well before use, as the colour pigments settle at the bottom of the tub. Apply 2–3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Several thin coats cover more evenly than one thick application, which is more likely to crack or flake off as it dries. Once dry, fire the piece in the range of 1180–1280 °C.
With or without glaze
Applied on its own, the engobe stays matt. This suits objects with an earthy character and motifs where sharp contours matter. Under a clear glaze, the colour becomes deeper and the surface glossy. Make sure the firing range of the glaze matches that of the engobe. A test tile on your own clay will show you beforehand how colour and glaze work together.
Mixing and combining
9820 Sunset can be mixed with other Edition colours. The range includes Toffee, Ocean, Schwarz and Gelb, among others. Mix the colours in a ratio you can repeat later, and make up enough for the whole project so that the shade stays consistent.
