Botz stoneware engobe 9804 Swimmingpool – matt engobe in blue and turquoise

Botz stoneware engobe 9804 Swimmingpool is a liquid engobe in a blue ranging from light blue/turquoise to deep blue, which you can use to add colour to ceramics. It is stable in the firing range 1180–1280 °C and is therefore intended for stoneware.

Without glaze it fires to a soft matt, earthy finish with good coverage and sharp contours. This makes it suitable for patterns, lines and areas that need to stay clearly defined. Under a clear glaze, for example Botz 9300 or 9870, the colour becomes more intense and glossy. The engobe can be mixed with other colours from the Botz Edition, so you can create your own shades.

How to apply the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply 2–3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Several thin coats cover more evenly than one thick coat, which is more likely to crack or flake off as it dries.

Matt or glossy – which to choose?

If you want sharp contours and a matt look, fire the engobe without glaze. For bright, glossy areas, cover it with a clear glaze. How the colour turns out depends on the clay, the thickness of application and the glaze. A test piece made from your own clay shows you the result in advance, especially if you are mixing colours from the Edition.
