Mayco Designer Liner SG-410 Bright Blue – fine lines and lettering on ceramics
Mayco Designer Liner SG-410 in Bright Blue (37 ml) is a clay-based, highly pigmented ceramic colour in a tube with a metal writing tip. You can draw fine or bold lines, lettering and small illustrations straight onto ceramics. No brush is needed. The tube is ready to use straight away.
Without a glaze over it, the liner fires matt. Mayco recommends using it under a non-running, clear or semi-transparent glaze. You can apply it to greenware, bisque and already glazed surfaces. With a damp brush you can also create watercolour or ink wash effects.
Working with the liner
Apply the colour straight from the tube onto the dry ceramic surface. Light pressure produces fine lines, more pressure wider ones. The liner is not dimensional, so it does not form a raised texture. If applied too thickly, it may crack and possibly flake off, according to Mayco. Work in thin, even lines. After use, wipe the tip clean and close the tube so that the colour does not dry in the nozzle.
- Suitable for greenware, bisque and glazed surfaces
- Create wash effects by blurring the lines with a damp brush
- It is best to practise lettering and patterns on a test tile first
Firing and glaze
For the Designer Liners, Mayco gives cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) with colour development. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour does not change, according to Mayco. These details apply to the whole series. If the Bright Blue is to go under a glaze, choose a non-running, clear or semi-transparent glaze so that the lines stay sharp. A test firing will show you beforehand how the colour looks with your combination.
