Mayco Designer Liner SG-408 Orange – fine lines and lettering on ceramics

The Mayco Designer Liner SG-408 in Orange (37 ml) is a clay-based, highly pigmented liner for fine lines, lettering and patterns on ceramics. Depending on the pressure, the metal writing tip makes fine or bolder lines, for example for outlines, lettering and illustrations. You can also blend the colour with a brush to create watercolour or ink-wash effects.

The liner is ready to use. You apply it to greenware, bisque or over other glazes. The orange is part of Mayco's Designer Liner range, which also includes black, white, red, yellow and blue, among others.

Working with the liner

Draw the lines with even pressure on a clean, dust-free surface. The liner is not dimensional, so it does not form raised lines. Do not apply it too thickly: according to Mayco, a layer that is too thick may crack and possibly flake off. It works best under a non-running, transparent or semi-transparent glaze, as the lines then stay sharp.

• Practise lettering and patterns beforehand on a test tile
• Clean the tip after use and close the cap so that it does not clog as the liner dries

Firing and finish

The liner can be fired from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Without a glaze over it, the orange fires to a matt finish. If you want the surface to be glossy, fire a transparent glaze over it. Test your combination of liner and glaze on a test piece first.
