Mayco Raku Glaze RK-107 Oil Slick – metallic lustre and crackle from raku firing
Mayco RAKU GLAZE RK-107 Oil Slick is a raku glaze for bisque ware that shows metallic lustre and crackle effects after raku firing. When fired correctly, it produces a mix of dark blue, green and violet tones. The jar contains 473 ml.
Raku glazes are developed for the raku firing process. In a standard electric firing they do not give the same result. Because raku firing is hard to predict, the result turns out slightly different with every firing. If a particular look matters to you, plan in some test pieces.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well. Apply 2 coats to the bisque ware and allow them to dry thoroughly. Thinner coats give stronger metallic effects. Do not glaze the insides or the undersides of the pieces.
Firing and post-firing treatment
According to the manufacturer, this glaze is fired to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) with a 5-minute hold. The effects only develop during the raku post-firing treatment:
- Remove the piece from the kiln with tongs; switch off an electric kiln first
- Place it in a metal container with combustible material and close it immediately
- Leave it to cool in the container for about 20 minutes
- Carry out the reduction outdoors because of flames and smoke
