Mayco RAKU GLAZE RK-106 Peacock Matte – matt copper raku glaze with blue and violet shimmer
Mayco RAKU GLAZE RK-106 Peacock Matte is a glaze for raku firing. After a correct raku firing it gives a matt copper tone with iridescent blue and violet shades. Mayco develops its raku glazes so that metallic lustre and crackle patterns form in this firing process. The jar contains 473 ml.
Important when choosing: the glaze only works in a raku environment. In a normal electric firing it does not give the same results. Because the raku process is hard to control, the result turns out slightly different with every firing.
How to use the raku glaze
Shake the jar briefly before use and stir the glaze well. Apply it with a brush to bisque-fired ware; according to Mayco, 2 coats are intended for RK-106. Thinner coats usually give stronger metallic effects. A thermal-shock-resistant raku clay helps prevent cracking during rapid cooling. Leave the underside of the piece unglazed so that it does not stick to the kiln furniture.
- Brush on only, do not spray
- Firing range cone 06–04 (approx. 998–1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Reduction outdoors in combustible material
- After cooling, clean with water and a scouring pad: this improves shine and colours
What to expect from the result
After reduction, Peacock Matte gives a matt copper tone with blue and violet shimmer. How strong the colours and cracks are depends on coat thickness, clay, firing schedule and reduction, and cannot be predicted exactly. So plan to make a test piece. The glaze is not intended for vessels used for food or drink; it is suitable for decorative pieces and objects.
