Mayco Jungle Gems CG965 Mocha Marble – crystal effect glaze for decorative ceramics

Mayco Jungle Gems CG965 Mocha Marble is an effect glaze with embedded fusible crystals for decorative ceramics. The base colour is a warm mocha brown. During firing, the gold and cream crystals melt and form marbled streaks and floral patterns. Every piece therefore looks different.

The glaze belongs to the Mayco Jungle Gems series and comes in a 118 ml jar, which suits smaller projects and colour tests. It is applied with a brush and is not intended for spraying. The glaze is not intended for dinnerware or for contact with food, but only for decorative items such as display bowls, figures or wall pieces.

Applying Mocha Marble

The crystals settle in the jar. Shake and stir the glaze well before each use so that they are evenly distributed.

• Apply 2–3 even coats with the fan brush to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing cone 04, approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
• Let each coat dry between applications.
• Stir again before the third coat so that the crystals sit evenly on the piece.
• Do not place crystals near the base: they can run during firing.
• Let the glaze dry thoroughly before firing.

Firing and effect

Fire the glaze at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). During firing the crystals melt and create the marbled streaks. The glaze is very reactive. For your first attempts, flat or easily controlled shapes where little can run are therefore best. The effect shows to its best advantage on pale clay or textured surfaces. A test piece will show you beforehand how Mocha Marble looks on your clay. You can combine the glaze with other Jungle Gems or Foundations glazes from Mayco.
