Mayco UG-222 Soft Yellow – yellow underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-222 Soft Yellow is an underglaze in a soft pastel yellow. You can use it to decorate ceramics on wet clay, greenware or bisque-fired ware: for solid areas, fine decoration, flowers and nature motifs. According to Mayco, the Fundamentals series is designed for consistent colour, easy application and reliable results.

Without clear glaze the colour fires matt; with a transparent clear glaze the surface turns glossy. The jar contains 59 ml.

Applying UG-222

Apply the colour with a brush or sponge in 2–3 coats on wet clay, greenware or bisque-fired ware (bisque firing at cone 04, approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Let each coat dry before applying the next to keep the finish even. One coat gives a paler yellow, three coats a stronger one. As the yellow is light, it works particularly well for flowers, suns, patterns and soft background areas. Spray application is not intended.

Firing and finish

For the series, Mayco gives a range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10 the colour becomes more concentrated according to Mayco, so the result can be stronger than at cone 06. A test tile on your own clay will show you beforehand how the yellow looks at your firing temperature. For stoneware firings, Mayco recommends SW-001 Stoneware Clear as the clear glaze.

Decorating tableware

For cups, plates and other vessels, cover the underglaze completely with a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze. Only in this combination is it suitable for tableware (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze it is not intended for tableware. According to ACMI, the AP seal means that no hazard labelling is required.
