Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-74 Hot Tamale – glossy red glaze for details and larger areas
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-74 Hot Tamale is a red, glossy ceramic glaze for damp clay and bisque-fired stoneware or earthenware. The glaze stays where you put it, which helps with clean lines, fine details and multi-coloured designs. The 236 ml is enough for brushwork and larger areas.
One coat gives a translucent red, and the more coats you apply, the more opaque it becomes. According to Mayco, Hot Tamale fires a reliable red. When fired to cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour stays semi-transparent and does not change.
Applying Stroke & Coat
Apply the glaze with a brush to damp clay or bisque. Stir it well beforehand. You decide the number of coats, depending on the opacity you want.
- 1 coat: slightly translucent
- 2–3 coats: opaque (Mayco recommends this number for full coverage)
- Let each coat dry before applying the next
- Thinned with water or medium, it gives soft gradients and transparent glazing effects
- All colours in the series can be mixed with each other
Firing and cone
Mayco formulates the series for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C respectively, guide values per Orton chart). It can be fired up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. At mid or high-fire temperatures, designs may run. For fine lines, make a test piece in your own clay beforehand, using your chosen firing. The firing behaviour is also given on the label.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that the product is exempt from hazard labelling.
