Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-15 Tuxedo – opaque black with a glossy finish
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-15 Tuxedo is a solid black ceramic glaze for areas of colour, fine lines and details. You apply it to damp clay, earthenware bisque or stoneware bisque. According to Mayco, the glaze stays where you put it: colours can sit side by side without running. This helps with outlines, patterns and multicoloured designs.
Tuxedo's high-fire behaviour is also documented: according to Mayco, the glaze turns opaque at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and does not change colour. This is not the case for every colour in the series; some turn lighter or transparent at high-fire temperatures.
Application, coverage and colour mixing
One coat of Tuxedo looks translucent; for full coverage Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The glaze fires glossy and needs no clear glaze over it. Thinned with water, it gives transparent, watercolour-style effects. All colours in the series can be mixed with one another, so you can also use Tuxedo to darken other shades. In the majolica technique, the glaze does not run and does not blend with the colours underneath.
Firing and cone
The Stroke & Coat glazes are formulated for cone 06/05. The firing range extends from cone 06 to cone 10, oxidising or reducing.
- Cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart): Tuxedo stays opaque and black
- Cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means the product requires no hazard labelling.
